Yummy gourmet food can be cooked up on the cheap. These are turkey meatballs (recipe to follow) wrapped in rice tortillas dabbed in olive oil with shiitake mushrooms on top, all grilled on the Foreman.

Olive Oil - purchased at Safeway
Shiitake mushrooms - purchased frozen at Rainbow & boiled before being placed on the grill

If you have access to a tv at 7:30 any night of the week, you should check out Seinfeld while you're unemployed. That show makes me laugh so hard now that I'm unemployed!

George always tries to sell stuff to make extra cash and just sits in his office organizing papers no matter what job he has.

Kramer is always into some new business venture or comes up with a random idea that gets him by for like a week. Then he says he's stressed out when he's just hanging out at his place or Jerry's.

If you don't have access to a computer, you can go to the public library and get online. Then just use Google for your email, documents (such as resume & cover letter), and calendar.

You can save all of your information and contacts online. So, don't stress if you had to sell your laptop to eat.

Farmers Markets

Besides Rainbow, some of the farmers markets are the cheapest places to get quality fruit and vegetables. I got a huge bunch of chard for $2 and beets for $1.50 at the Noe Valley Farmers market a couple weeks ago. The Saturday market at the ferry building always has a variety of foods to choose from. And the Castro market just started up on Wednesday evenings if you want to add some flair to your diet.

If you think you can't afford your place anymore, there's still hope for decent roommates according to the postings on Craigslist. Decent roommate situations start at $450 this week. I do suggest that you ask your potential roommates the standard questions though...i.e....

Do you sleep?
Do you pay bills?
Do you smoke or drink in the house? If so, how much?
Are all of your roommates human?
Are you loud?
Do you invite strangers into your home on a regular basis? Define stranger...
Do you have friends?
Define clean.

If you can't afford your rent anymore but not sure if you can handle roommates, I suggest trying out Airbnb.com. It's advertised as an alternative to a hotel. I almost rented a room from some folks who posted on this site. And we even almost became official roommates because they were so cool. But then I found a place that I could afford for just me, myself, and I.

Right now the most popular room posted on Airbnb.com is just $34 a night and in the Marina!

I've found that you can still stay fit without the money for a gym membership. You can work out at several gyms with free trial passes and take free yoga classes.

In these times, I have found that you don't have to have cash to go to a cool event in this city.

On SquidList, I've found out about free food tastings, wine tastings, fairs, and concerts. This week there's a free music party in the Sunset and a free film festival in SOMA.

On Craigslist, there's a crafts fair mentioned in the events category for this week.

And there's always something listed in either SF Weekly or The Guardian.

A Day At The Library

Whether you are in the mood for new music, to check out a movie, or to check out a new book, a day at the library can be a great way to take a break from the job hunt. A book can renew your mind and give you a new outlook on everything. Music can keep you pumped. And it's all free at the library! That's what's helped me sometimes.
